joe kleinerman 12 hour race: update

i just got home from the joe kleinerman 12 hour run in crocheron park, queens. the race, from 7:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m., was interrupted twice by rain. the second rain storm included thunder and lightning, so the richie suspended the race for about 20 minutes as we waited for rain to pass.

the race was preceded by a short ceremony to induct 5 runners into the broadway ultra society's hall of fame.

i got in 51.4 miles, and

august race schedule update

i just posted a quick update to my race schedule for august. after today's 12 hour race in queens, the rest of the month will be a return to shorter distances. but the most notable addition to the schedule is the trrc biathlon, a 3 mile run followed by a half mile swim. i hope to run/swim both portions depending on today's outcome, or i may just do the run portion as part of a relay. stay tuned for that one.

the other notable item is a switch from the nyrr team championship 5 miler, to the norwalk (lightfoot) summer series 11 miler. with last month's park to park 10k, i now have 8 nyrr scored races and the nyc marathon will, hopefully, be my ninth (if i don't reach that magic number sooner, with races in september and october).

but the highlight of my august race schedule is undoubtedly the catskill mountain 100k relay! our team consists of emmy, myriam, pam, don, and me! each of us will run 2 separate 10k legs for a total of 20k mileage per runner. this should be a lot of fun, and i'll post more on this one in the future!

last but not least, have added a westport summer series race (and maybe will fit in a second at the end of the month). in past years i've only run the labor ten miler, which closes out the series. while i've run in westport many times in the past, the upcoming 6.85 miler will be, interestingly, my n0n-10 miler in the series!

july recap: races and concerts!

short version: july was a very interesting month for me. i saw 6 concert performances, and skipped a 7th, plus ran 5 road races, and dnfed a 6th one. i can't remember going to see that many concerts in such a short period of time since i was in college! i also travelled to 4 states, one of which, new hampshire, was our annual trip to deposit katie at summer camp.

long version: races and mileage. my monthly mileage of 261.09 was a 20+ mile increase from june's 241.7 miles. of july's mileage, 90.3 were race miles (which exclude the dnf). the race miles spanned, at the short end, the 2-person, 6 mile xc relay which i ran with katie, up to the 60 miles i logged at the 24 hour race (of which i ran for only 17.5 hours). in between those extremes was a 10k, 8 miler, and half marathon. the dnf took place at the vermont 100, of which i only completed 47.2 miles before i dropped out.

here are the races: putnam county classic 8 miler (emmy made her debut as race director at this one), waveny 2-person 6 mile relay (katie and i alternated running a mile each), the nyrr park to park 10k, the 24 hour around the lake ultra and, last but not least, the nyc half marathon (which i ran on behalf of the world lung foundation).

concert performances: july included 4 concerts, and 6 performances. 5 of those took place within a 4 day period. first up was the steve miller band at radio city music hall, with joe cocker as the opening act. the next day was trip to governor's island to see dark star orchestra, with tea leaf green as the opening act (it was my first exposure to tea leaf green and, now, count me among their fans). two days later it was over to jones beach to catch phil lesh and friends (but our tailgating resulted in missing levon helms, the opening act). last but not least, last night was the really big show (apologies to ed sullivan), bruce springsteen at giants stadium!

some stray thoughts: on the running front, going to see the bruce springsteen concert last night meant missing the one night only premiere of dean karnazes 50/50/50 marathon movie. that was a bummer, but there's always the upcoming dvd release. similarly, on the music front, i missed seeing jgb (jerry garcia band) with melvin seals and stu allen because it conflicted with the vermont 100 miler. luckily, my friend paul (who recommended jgb to me in the first place) not only went, but posted a guest review of the show). even more fortuitous, a few days later a podcast of the entire show was posted! so i did "catch" that one after all ;)

bruce springsteen "magic" tour at giants stadium: review, photos and setlist

last night was my third springsteen concert in 28 years - with a slight 24 year gap in between my last bruce show, during the "born in the u.s.a." tour in the summer of 1984! it was also pat's very first springsteen concert! i can certainly report that his glory days aren't anywhere near coming to a close. springsteen came on LATE - i'm not talking about the typical 45 minutes to one hour late he's known for. while tickets stated 7:30 - and most fans know that means an 8:15-8:30 real start time, last night the concert didn't start until 9:30!

that may have been an unavoidable result of the huge traffic nightmare that developed yesterday afternoon when a tanker overturned on the thruway and caused major stretches of the highway (including exit 16w to the stadium) to be shut down for hours. while no official announcement was made about this at giants stadium, it was the topic of conversation as most of the seats remained empty until well after 8. but it seemed that everyone eventually made it in by the time bruce kicked off with "summertime blues!"

springsteen has lost none of his energy - and may even have gained endurance - over all these years. he ran thru hit after hit with unrestrained enthusiasm - i mean this figuratively, and literally (as he repeated ran from one end to the stage to the other). with that high energy level pouring off the stage, the audience couldn't help but get pulled into the excitement. especially so since he followed up "summertime blues" with "tenth avenue freeze-out!" pretty cool, if you'll excuse the pun.

song highlights for me, after "freeze-out," included "spirit in the night" (my all time favorite bruce tune), "candy's room," "blinded by the light," and "she's the one." my favorite song of the night was, unquestionably, "because the night!" while he had written this one for patti smith, and her version of it is definitive, bruce took it back last night and redefined it in my book! truly spectacular performance of a classic!

other notable moments included pulling out and doing "pink flamingos" for his wife, patti. and the tossing water on the crowd when things got really heated during "mary's room." plus, taking requests via fan placards - including reading them out loud and putting them on display via the monitor - cool. the things i could do without: listening to his political laments (which, thankfully, he kept brief) and the row of drunken frat boys that occupied the seats directly behind us! i also wanted to hear "thunder road" (my other favorite bruce tune) - but since he had played it during the two previous shows, i didn't really expect to hear it.

all in all - this was a great bruce show! go SEE him! fwiw, one woman pat talked to as we entered the stadium had just driven 9 hours from virginia to catch this show (her 15th). that certain rises to the level of deadhead commitment - haha.
