nyc marathon: 2008 photos and results

nyc marathon number 7 is in the books for me. my 3:38:13 was well-off my target of 3:30, but i still had a great time! here are some pre- and post-race photos i took today.

nyc marathon: a look back at 2007, pre-race photos

just about to head over to white plains high school to catch the wtc bus down to staten island. that's been my preferred method of getting to the start for the last 4-5 years. here are a few photos from last year.

the blind tiger ale house: a great "bloody beer"

finally, after 6 months or so, i got a chance to try a "bloody beer" at the blind tiger ale house. ever since todd and i checked out a rogue beer tasting at blind tiger and learned, to our surprise, that these specials were only constructed on the weekends, i've been trying to get there on a saturday or sunday to try one.

well, after the international friendship run this morning, i tried one - and it was definitely worth the wait. i watched johanna, the bartender, construct a portion of the this unusual concoction - the beer part. but, sadly, i didn't pay attention to the two different beers she added to the bloody mary mixture that served as the base. then she went back to the kitchen to add the various accouterments before serving it up!

the wonderful spicy brew was awesome. it was like having brunch in a glass! honestly, if i wasn't running the nyc marathon tomorrow, i would have had a second one!

after i tried this, donna ordered one as well. she and her husband had been to the phil lesh halloween show the night before. in addition to filling us in on the show and setlist, we traded brew house stories. we both thought the ginger man had turned into a yuppie bar - at least weeknights. i'm going to head back there on a weekend to recheck the ambiance. they hadn't heard of rattle & hum, so i put in a good word for that relatively new place.

nyc marathon: international friendship run, 2008 photos

what a difference a year can make! incredibly beautiful weather this morning contrasted the cold, damp conditions we faced last year. even more amazing was the turnout for the 2008 international friendship run - 16,000! that was almost half of the 39,000 marathon participants!

from the sound of the cheers, it seemed that the german contingent was the largest (or loudest), followed, in a close second, by the french and italians. standing, then running, in that ocean of international participants really brought home the global nature of the nyc marathon!

here are some of the photos i took along the way. the highlight was reaching 59th street via 6th avenue, turning left onto central park south, and following the blue line to the finish! last year, because of the trials, this part of the friendship run wasn't included.

nyc marathon: international friendship run, a look back at 2007

i'm just heading out to the friendship run and thought i'd post some of the pictures i took last year. that was a very strange experience because the day began watching the start of the mens olympic marathon trials across from st. patricks cathedral. then in walked to the united nations for the friendship run - a fun, costume-filled, time!

the course was shortened to 1.75 miles because of the trials. it finished on 6th avenue, two blocks before central park. when i walked up to park to meet up with rob and emmy (whom i never managed to find!) - i learned of the tragic death that cast a pall not over the morning, but entire weekends activities!

today, the course will once again be 2.5 miles - finishing in central park. will post those photos when i get home this afternoon.
