Winter in May :O

Woke up yesterday morning and was glad I hadn't put away the winter running gear.  With 22+ mph winds, the low 30's had a real feel in the low 20's!  In a change from my normal weekend routine - running on the Bronx River Parkway - I switched over to the Leatherstocking Trail.  My ulterior motive wasn't running portions of the Paine to Pain course (which I did) - but rather have the woods act as a barrier to some of the winds (which they didn't).

As sign of the times - "park users practice safe social distancing."

Astonishingly, while runners, walkers and others did that -- a full grown deer was standing on the trail as I approached.  That wasn't astonishing.  What made me do a double take was that it made no effort to move as I got closer!  It wasn't until I slowed down and reached into my pocket for my phone that it decided to run off.  Apparently it was photo-shy - not runner shy!

This morning it was noticeably warmer and less windy - but still chiller than a "normal" day in May.

Last, but certainly, not least:  Happy Mother's Day!

May 2017 Race Schedule

With final exams to give/grade and travel to kick off this month, the earliest I'll be able to line up for a race is Mother's Day!  So hopefully I'll be over in Norwalk to run the Lightfoot Runners 10K :D

Otherwise, the only definite race on the calendar this month is the Brooklyn Half Marathon - and the 4th and last training run for the Great NY Running Exposition 100 Miler at the end of the month (an evening run at that).

So here's how the slimmed down schedule looks:

5/14 - Norwalk Mother's Day 10k
5/20 - NYRR Brooklyn Half Marathon
5/27 - TGNY Training Run #4

If you're at any of these events - say hello!

2015 norwalk mothers day 10k: race photos & results

it was a dreary start to the day - drizzle when i left the house, fog on the drive over to norwalk, and a damp chill over calf pasture beach.  and, once the race was underway, humidity became the real race damper, it was thick all along the course.

but the weather didn't take away from happy mothers day!  and i managed a 46:01, 7:25 finish - just missing a sub-46 by a couple of seconds.  that was a solid minute and a half+ improvement over my scotland run 47:39 last month.  not too shabby for a humid morning :D

next up for me, instead of traveling down to brooklyn for the half - will run the law day 5k in darien.

2014 norwalk mother's day 10k: race photos & results

it's seems like a long time since i've done back to back races on a given weekend.  this morning was the norwalk mother's day 10k on the heels of the healthy kidney 10k in central park yesterday.  without the oppressive humidity we had yesterday morning, the running conditions at calf pasture beach were beautiful!

i had no real time goal in mind at the start - just hitting last year's 47:08 would have been fine.  i was incredibly surprised to run a 45:59 (unofficial) which not only bettered 2013 - but it was just 30 seconds off yesterday's finish!  that was good enough for second in my age group!

next up is the brooklyn half marathon next weekend.

i'll write up a race report for the pair of 10k's tomorrow.

here are the race results from hi-tek racing.

the great photo of the start is tony's :D

2013 norwalk mother's day 10k: race photos and results

it didn't seem like it would be good morning to run.  it rained the entire drive over to calf pasture beach.  luckily, it was down to a light drizzle by the time i got there - and just a few drops by the time we started.  half way through the sun even managed to make its appearance.

as for the race itself, the mother's day 10k was my 5th straight 10k since the scotland run at the beginning of april.  i ran a 48:40 at the westport minute man 2 weeks ago, so my time goal would be a sub-48 this time around.  my recovery/base building has be going well and i wanted to push the pace a bit to see how my foot would take the extra stress.  if all went well i want to get back to the track and start doing some speed work.

i started off with a pair of sub-7:30 miles - i thought was too fast.  i slowed to a 7:45 for mile three, then had a pair of 7:35 miles.  after 5 miles my foot was no worse for the wear and a felt good continuing to push the pace for the final mile. i crossed the finish in 47:05, a 7:35 pace overall.  i was more than pleased with that outcome (and could probably have squeezed in under 47 minutes if i hadn't slowed down in mile 3).  all in all, a great morning :D

2011 norwalk mother's day 10k: race photos and results

it's become something of a tradition to kick off mother's day with a trip over to norwalk for the 10k. this morning, except for an annoying little headwind, it was the perfect weather for a run! there was a large turnout, which also included participants for the 5k walk. well over 350 runners finished the 10k. i came in well under my target of 48 minutes, with a 47:05 :D

here are the results from hi-tek racing.
