2017 5th Annual RVRR NYC Bridge Run

Another great event put together by Bob Tona and the Raritan Valley Road Runners - the 5th Annual NYC Bridges Run.  Yesterday, the Bridges Run moved downtown (last year it began in Midtown and concluded with a tram ride back to the City!) and covered roughly a half marathon+ distance (ending at Jeremy's Ale House, under the Brooklyn Bridge).  For me, it was essentially a 10K+ (instead of the Half) because I had to cut it short after the Manhattan Bridge. 

Still, it was a fantastic day to run (any distance) - after the wet, soupy conditions on Saturday.  The course was a bit close to home since it started down the block from my office - and ran past where I also teach!  In fact, given the Team races in Central Park the day before, coming back into the City on Sunday made for a rare 7 straight days commuting into Manhattan - and, then there's this week's commute to look forward to as well!

2013 sgt. keith ferguson memorial 5k: race photos and results

 

what a fantastic morning to run over the brooklyn bridge!  i ran the sgt. keith ferguson memorial 5k back in 2010 and have wanted to come back to run it since.  with my office right across the street from city hall park, and pace university right next to the bridge itself, it's hard to resist.

 

i didn't really have any time goal in mind, having done the nyrr club team championships 5 miler yesterday.  but i hoped to run it in under 22 minutes.  that target seemed out of reach during the very crowded first half mile. but when the pack finally thinned out, i managed to get into a groove.  on the downside, there were no mile markers!  still, i managed to finish in 21:33, a 6:57 pace - which really surprised me since my watch read 21:38 (a 6:58 pace).  regardless, both were faster than the 5k i ran 2 weeks ago at purchase college :D

brooklyn bridge officially opened 127 years ago today!

the brooklyn bridge officially opened to the public on may 24, 1883 - 13 years after construction had begun. here is a brief description of that day, from wikipedia:

"The opening ceremony was attended by several thousand people and many ships were present in the East Bay for the occasion. President Chester A. Arthur and New York Mayor Franklin Edson crossed the bridge to celebratory cannon fire and were greeted by Brooklyn Mayor Seth Low when they reached the Brooklyn-side tower.
...

On that first day, a total of 1,800 vehicles and 150,300 people crossed what was then the only land passage between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Emily Warren Roebling was the first to cross the bridge."

the brooklyn bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the world, and has become symbolic of borough of brooklyn. in a coincidence, the brooklyn half marathon was held just this weekend. i, together with thousands of runners, made our way to brooklyn for the race - some of whom may even have taken the brooklyn bridge to get there :D
