A Few Merry Christmas Miles :D

Merry Christmas!

This morning I ran a not too chilly 5 miles.  Despite the frozen lake behind me, it wasn't cold.  The frozen landscape made it appear that way - but the upper 20's (and no wind to speak of) doesn't constitute running in the cold.  Having said that, I nevertheless stuck with tights and skipped digging out the shorts - haha!

It's that time of year again - Festivus! 

What better way to kick off the holiday season than with yet another example of why Seinfeld was the highwater mark of sitcoms :D

Happy Winter Solstice - 2019

Happy Winter Solstice - albeit a few hours early!  It formally arrives at 11:19 PM tonight.

I spent the last day of the Fall grading exams.  All that's left is for me to submit the final grades - and then my winter break will officially begin :D

After a few days of above-average temperatures... Christmas morning is back to the chilly starts we've had for the better part of December.  As always, hopefully a few pre-gift opening miles... then the presents, then the cooking, then the family and feasting!

This year Christmas was a dual celebration - the holiday itself and Katie's graduation as well!  We had my brother and his family over, as well as my mom, for our traditional Christmas dinner. 

It's hard to believe that 2017 has come to a close.  In a few short days New Years Eve will be here and it'll be time to welcome in 2018! 

Radio Jingle Bells German shortwave pirate radio 6261 khz (via SDR) Holiday eQSL

The first eQSL of 2016 arrived this morning from Radio Jingle Bells - for their Christmas Eve show.  I tuned in to their broadcast, from Germany, on 6261 kHz via the SDR at Twente in the Netherlands. In a twist from John Lennon - they played some old holiday inspired music from Paul McCartney!

Radio Merlin International British shortwave pirate radio 6210 khz (via SDR) Holiday eQSL

 

This great Holiday eQSL arrived from Radio Merlin International this morning (just after a more traditional one)!  This time they were on 6210 kHz (conditions made this broadcast a bit tougher to receive than the earlier one).

Radio Oliebollenbakkers Netherlands mediumwave pirate radio 1645 khz (via SDR) Holiday eQSL

This great eQSL arrived last night from Radio Oliebollenbakkers (within half hour of submitting reception report)!  If it wasn't for at heads up via Facebook, would not have heard this broadcast!  I tuned in to their show on 1645 kHz (just north of the standard AM band), not only were they giving shout out to listeners (one from Finland, I noted) - but they gave one out to me (yours truly) as well!  In addition to the various shout outs to listeners, they requested reception reports and said special eQSLs would be sent out.

Pink Panther Radio Netherlands shortwave pirate radio 6803 khz (via SDR) Holiday eQSL

I received this great holiday themed eQSL from Pink Panther Radio this morning!  Conditions made for at tough reception - but somehow Air Supply's "Even the Nights are Better..." (an 80's FM radio classic) came through!

Since I've posted a lot of eQSL's this year, though I would stay with the radio theme and find a vintage radio inspired image!  This one hails back to a radio  magazine cover from 1922 - and Santa working with the then "relatively" new technology to work up his toy lists :D

Happy Festivus - 2015!

Happy Festivus - a holiday for the rest of us!

It seems like Festivus - even as a Seinfeld fan - has almost become an annual post with me! 

As I wrote (posted) last year:

for seinfeld fans out there, this is the december holiday tradition to observe. whether it gets you into the proper holiday spirit is another matter entirely (especially if your festivus centers around the airing of grievances). either way, it's a great reason to watch some seinfeld in the midst of all the airings of "it's a wonderful life," "miracle on 34th street" (either version), "white christmast," "elf" - you get the picture!

so have a great festivus - and christmas is just 48 hours away :D

And it still holds true for 2015!

Radio Romania International shortwave Holiday Greetings!

 

 

This beautiful Holiday Greetings card from Radio Romania International arrived in my email today!  I received an old school QSL card from them this summer  (see below).  There signal is a reliable cross Atlantic reception here on the east coast.  I logged them on my Sangean ATS 909 receiver.
